Selecting a Location for Your Portrait Session

choosing your portrait session location

Are you an upcoming senior or a family looking to schedule a portrait session? There are a lot of things that are involved in scheduling a session. For instance, finding the right photographer that fits your style. Equally as important is selecting a location. Something I love about our great city of Pittsburgh are all of the amazing locations that surround it. You can have an urban or city vibe, fields and flowers, country or anything more specific to a special location that means something to you and your family. Answering the question, “what look and feel do I want my photos to have?” will help you decide which location to choose for your session.

Urban / City

If you are looking for an urban look for your portrait session and love Pittsburgh, I highly recommend downtown Pittsburgh. From the bridges to wall art and colorful doors on the Mexican War Streets, there are so many amazing backdrops.

Nature, Flowers and fields

Do you like a more natural look? Maybe a field with tall grass would fit your style. Do you like bright pops of color? Choose a flower farm with lots of color flower selections. I have photographed sessions at Hartwood Acres, Simmons Farms, and Phipps Conservatory. These locations provide very different, yet beautiful settings for your portraits.

Small Town / Country

Just a short drive north of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania provides amazing locations from a small town feel in Historic Harmony to country vibe at McConnells Mill.

These are just a few examples of the many amazing locations surrounding the Greater Pittsburgh area. Here are a few important things to remember when choosing your portrait session location:

  1. Determine what look and feel you want your portraits to have.
  2. Think about the decor of your home. Will an urban location fit in or a more country setting?
  3. Choose outfits that fit that location to give your portrait a cohesive look.
  4. Choose a location that allows you to have fun and be yourself.
  5. Bring props that are important to you to add character to the portraits.

If you would like to schedule a session, let’s chat. I would love to hear more about your vision for your portraits and help you select the best location that fits your style and home decor so you can display your portraits for years to come.
